A HARDWARE store will open next month in the heart of Newcastle's central business district, defying one trend and setting another.
Sydney businessman Fedor Czeiger is behind the move to transform the former Angus and Robertson store in Hunter St into a Thrifty Link outlet.
It is the largest new business established in the main street's east end for years.
It is also a novelty in the inner city.
Mr Czeiger has owned the building for three years, having discovered it during a working visit.
He already operates hardware stores in Sydney's Pitt and York streets, plus a third outlet at Bondi Junction.
`We're all about convenience and service and that's why hardware stores in the heart of the city work,' Mr Czeiger said.
`We'll be opening here on April 12 and we'll have the full range of general hardware, with a specialised lighting section upstairs.'
Former Knights reserve grade team manager Neil Audet will manage the store.
Mr Audet is enthusiastic about the establishment of a hardware store in the CBD.
`We'll have tools, fasteners and paints, everything you'd expect in a hardware store,' he said.
`And it'll be a convenient and pleasant place to shop.'
